Yes groovy people, here we go again. Off on another adventure. This time towards Arnhem, in the east of the Netherlands.
HOT HOT HOT
The temperature is nuts. It was 28 degrees when I was going for the train in Alkmaar. And now as I sit in the shaded living room of where I will be staying the temperature outside is between the 35 to 40 degrees…nuts I tell you
It is a different story of the journey compared to the one I had going to Eindhoven.
I got in the train in Alkmaar and got out in Arnhem, no changes needed, which is pleasant as I can the leave the bike in one place.
And so my never ending battle with Google Maps continues, when the f**ker sent me the wrong way. I did not have my Garmin computer handy, so I had to rely on Google ‘bloody’ maps
And with a heavy bag on my back and that temperature, it was seriously no fun. So man, I was happy when I finally arrived. Another plus point they have hills here, I miss climbing with the bike, but next time I will like to do it without the 10 + kilo bag on my back. But as I said I was happy when the neighbour could let me in. The house was very cool and perfect for me to relax until the owner could get here. She had an earlier appointment in another city, so that is why she could not be there to greet me.
After the hello’s and goodbye’s, I can’t believe the owner said I talk a lot…me…I am the epitome of a silent shy person…(pause for laughter…okay okay, calm down LOL) Well anyway I finally set off in search of a bridge too far. You must have seen the film and the bridge, here in Arnhem. It had a major part in W.W.2. After a few wrong turns, this time it probably was my fault. I saw the bridge. It is always humbling to witness such a thing and proves to me how little any problems I have are, when you consider how many soldiers (on both sides) gave their lives in the battle for this bridge. This is the real deal history, my friends.
After many photo’s of the bridge and the surrounding area. I went into a small shop/museum. It was nice and cool inside so I was glad that I could chat with the people behind the counter.
I know we have it warm in Alkmaar, but you do not realise the influence and the breeze of the sea air, until you are in a place like this where it is very humid.
I went in search of the town center, I was thinking it would be nice to get a bite to eat, since I had only had a few sandwiches the whole. As said in an earlier blog, I am not the greatest of travellers and hardly eat on the days of the journey.
So after a little search I found a nice restaurant selling some of the local cuisine. So as they say, when in Rome…. I splashed out on this…
Man, it was just what the doctor ordered, well it my doctor had been a lover of the finest cuisine, he would have LOL
Well as I had expected that meal filled the empty space and with the chance of rain and thunder, I thought it wise to head back to the appartement.
I bought supplies for base camp and as I walked up the road to the house, I noticed the man who had been working on the waterline outside the house, was still there, but now there was a bloody big hole and lots of other trucks.
Being sweaty, I wanted to have a shower, well folks you might have guessed it, the bloody water had been turned off until they could fix the pipe.
I love my trips, they are never boring. The one had to Eindhoven had all the changing the train excitement and now first day in Arnhem, bloody roasting and no running water, ha ha ha never a dull moment. Now I could go ape shit and complain, but why should I. The men couldn’t do nothing about the water problem and that’s just how it goes.
So no shower, but luckily the lady across the road who had the key, offered to fill buckets and pans with water and that offer was accepted.
And so to the evening. I had the wifi working here, so I could operate my laptop and since I have DUTV (the TV station for Dundee United) I settled down with crisps and sweets to watch the game. No beer as I planning to set off early tomorrow to go cycling
Well, I enjoyed the game, Dundee United are back in the big league in Scotland and now playing some good football under the new manager. We were playing top of the league
team Hibs. It was a very close and entertaining game. But as they say you have to take your chances and they did and we didn’t and we lost 1-0, but I am still positive and proud of the performance of the team and that without our top scorer Shankland, who is out injured.
And so the night draws to a close, it is still warm outside and Bob the watertank builder and his mates are still out playing…
And so my groovy friends, day 1 has passed and let’s hope tomorrow brings some fun things for me to tell you and we are still waiting on the thunder they promised. I will bid you all a very good night
Until tomorrow, thank you for taking time to read this
